Ed Sabol died today. Sabol and his son, Steve, created and spearheaded NFL Fiilms since 1964, in the process revolutionizing the relationship between sports and television. Through the narrative storytelling of John Facenda, iconic slow-motion effects and blooper reels, dramatic scores, and vibrant color broadcasts, NFL Films was instrumental in the changing of the guard from baseball to football as “America’s game.” There are plenty of father-son combinations in sports history, but for football, there are arguably none more important than the Sabols.
